Founders Biographies

DEAN ANDERSON is co-founder and president of Being First, Inc., a change leadership development and transformational change consulting firm located in Durango, Colorado. His clients are executives of Fortune 1000 companies that are engaged in transformational change.

Mr. Anderson is known as a powerful speaker, writer, coach, consultant and masterful trainer. His consulting success comes from assisting his clients to build integrated change strategies that deliver the business results they need while simultaneously impacting the people and culture of the organization. His training specialty is developing leaders and consultants into conscious and competent change leaders who can lead their organization through successful transformation. Mr. Anderson’s client list includes Fortune 1000 companies such as Microsoft Corporation, PeaceHealth, Servus Credit Union, Canadian Park Service, Detroit Edison, DTE Energy, Exxon, Cincinnati Gas and Electric, City of Calgary, The Clorox Company, Holiday Inns, United Way of America, Home Savings of America, Levis Strauss, People’s Gas, and RR Donnelley and Sons.

Dean co-authored with Linda Ackerman Anderson two books in the Jossey-Bass Practicing Organization Development Series, Beyond Change Management: Advanced Strategies for Today’s Transformational Leaders and The Change Leader’s Roadmap: How to Navigate Your Organization’s Transformation. The industry journal, The Organization Development Practitioner, called these two books "the most comprehensive and the most immediately usable of all approaches available."

Mr. Anderson has published over fifty articles, including "Awake at the Wheel: Moving Beyond Change Management to Conscious Change Leadership" and "Development, Transition or Transformation: Bringing Change Leadership into the 21st Century". He has been featured in Business Week, and publishes in Warren Bennis' Leadership Excellence periodical.

As a thought-leader in the field of Organization Transformation, his eclectic understanding of mindset, culture, and process—or how things naturally unfold—gives him a unique perspective in his coaching to executives and change consultants. Mr. Anderson’s insight into personal transformation and the inner dynamics of high performing people, teams and organizations began at an early age as a national champion swimmer: Dean was the first ten year old boy in the world to ever break a minute in the one hundred yard freestyle, and the first twelve year old to ever break two minutes for the two hundred yard freestyle.

On this foundation of elite performance, in 1980, Mr. Anderson founded the Optimal Performance Institute (OPI), where he taught high performing executives, athletes and performing artists how to manage their internal states of consciousness to optimize their external performance. His Optimal Performance Training, one of the first and most innovative self-empowerment and personal change programs delivered in organizations, provides the framework for Being First’s current leading edge Self Mastery Trainings. His pragmatic approaches are now applied to improving change leadership skill, developing leaders, technical skill performance, creativity, communications, conflict resolution, teamwork and responding effectively to organizational change. His original curriculum at OPI produced hundreds of successful executives as well as Olympic champions.

Mr. Anderson’s current passion is helping senior executives overcome their predilection to command and control so they can become more “co-creative,” and learn to lead and build co-creative organizations. Co-creating, by Mr. Anderson’s definition, is the high performance way of being and relating of people working together across boundaries to produce “Win-win-win” results that serve the whole enterprise, the other individuals involved, and one’s self. He is currently writing a book on Co-Creating and Personal Transformation, and speaks throughout the world on these subjects.

At Being First, Mr. Anderson has been the central developer of the Co-Creating System™ for optimizing personal and organizational results. He co-developed with Linda Ackerman Anderson the landmark Change Leader's Roadmap, often referred to as "the most comprehensive, pragmatic and user-friendly resource for organizations undergoing transformational and transitional change." He also developed the Co-Creative Partnering Process and the Co-Creative Team Development Process. Dean co-authors the e-newsletter, “Results from Change," which is distributed globally to change leaders and consultants. He also produced the Self Mastery Series audio tape program.

Mr. Anderson received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Stanford University, where he continued his excellence as an All-American swimmer and water polo player. Dean’s hobbies include fly fishing, river rafting, hiking, playing the guitar and drumming. The most important part of his life are his wife, Linda, and his daughter, Terra.
